Appealing Your Tax Bill

Updated: Jan 4, 2020

If you believe your property was overvalued in the recent re-evaluation you can still appeal your tax bill. Your bill is based on the assessed value of your home and state law allows you to appeal the assessed value after receiving your tax bill. You must file your appeal between August 15th and November 12th.

Start by reading the message on the back of your tax bill under the heading of “REAL ESTATE AND TANGIBLE TAX APPEAL PROCESS (RIGL 44-5-26)”. Click on the link below to access and print an appeal form. Select “Application for appeal of property tax”. It takes some work, but by accessing real estate sites in search of similar properties that have been sold in your neighborhood and reviewing the assessor’s database of North Smithfield properties, you might be able to prove that your property has been assessed too high. If you succeed and get a favorable decision your property tax bill will be reduced. Please consider sharing this post on your Facebook page to make North Smithfield friends and relatives aware of the appeal process.

You may also qualify for senior, veterans and disabled exemptions so review those forms and file if you qualify. If you have any questions about the process call the Tax Assessor’s department. The number posted on the back of the tax bills is 767-2200, extension 325.
