HAS A NORTH CAROLINA FIRM BEEN HIRED BY THE TOWN TO ASSIST IN CONTRACT ARBITRATION WITH THE POLICE UNION?
The item below appeared on the August 5, 2019 agenda for the NORTH SMITHFIELD TOWN COUNCIL meeting. Not only was the agenda item vague, but even after watching the YouTube video of the meeting you’ll still have questions about what’s going on. Public comments by the Town Council and Administrator were extremely limited and didn’t reveal many details. Comments did not indicate which party filed for arbitration, when they filed, and why they filed. Usually binding arbitration comes after months of negotiations and many hours of meetings but there was no discussion about how we reached this point. One point which was publicly clarified is that the Town will be responsible for purchasing airline tickets. Although the agenda item failed to identify the specific union, I’m assuming it’s the police union since their contract expired on June 31, 2019 and to the best of my knowledge the Town has never been involved with negotiating the firefighter’s contract.
